John 20:19-31 In this passage, believed to be the original conclusion of John’s gospel to which chapter 21 was later added, we are told why the author’s purpose in writing the gospel: “that you may believe… and through this belief have life”.  The fourth Gospel is believed to have been written several years after the other three which, by comparison, are called the synoptic…with the same eye or focus…gospels.  The questions being asked in Christian communities and the challenges to faith and belief of Christians, especially their relationship to the Jewish community, had evolved.  A new version of the gospel was needed to address those issues and strengthen the faith of Christians in a new era.

In his interaction with Thomas, Jesus pronounces a blessing on all who will come to believe without actually seeing Jesus…the generation of Christians who never saw Jesus in person but come to believe through the testimony of first and second generation disciples and the written word of the gospels.

As Peter’s denial and repentant return to professing Jesus would later serve as an encouragement for the return of Christians who, in times of persecution, denied knowing Jesus, so Thomas’ need for more evidence before fully accepting the truth of Jesus’ resurrection was an encouragement for later Christians struggling with aspects of faith.
